Building Loyalty with Future Employees through Milestone-based Scholarships

One of the challenges we consistently hear from our corporate partners is maintaining engagement with college students after they've accepted a job offer up until the student begins employment with the Organization. This challenge is reflected across both internships as well as full and part-time employment.

We have found that using milestone-based scholarships is one of the most effective ways to maintain engagement and loyalty with future hires. In this particular use case, the employer offers a scholarship to help fund a future employee's tuition, fees, and other college expenses for the remaining period of time that the student is enrolled. In return, the student completes a set of milestones that maintain engagement with the employer and the team the student will be working with upon graduation.

In a loyalty-based scholarship program milestones can include the following:

  1. Signing the offer letter - the process usually begins with the acceptance of a job offer

  2. Completion of certain onboarding activities - this can include things like HIPPA or sexual harassment training, learning content on company culture, mission, and objectives, as well as key job responsibilities

  3. Last mile training activities - completion of skills assessments and subsequent training to ensure the student is job ready on the first day of work
